I was using 60 grit, so I have no experience with it's finishing abilities. and works well. Well this sander worked awesome. I changed paper a few times, and it's easy & quick. For me, this sander gets a BIG 5 Stars, no doubt.
Just buy the 5" 8-hole paper, works like a charm. It comes in a very nice case, with vacuum attachment, medium pad, and one piece of 80 grit paper. It fills up quickly, but is very easy to empty. The extension cord is long (8'). I highly recommend mend this sander from my experience. But other reviews said it leaves no "swirling" marks. The Hook & Loop sand paper attachment system is simply great. Many had good reviews, but holding the sand paper was an issue.
I'm a novice regarding working with wood basically, having little experience after high school wood shop classes. You'll still get some dust in your face and airways, so it's best to know the wind direction or ventilation system air flows to help reduce this condition. No issue with this unit after 3 solid hours of heavy use, wearing out paper and changing it several times. But I needed to get a sander to sand my redwood deck rails & spindles, while restoring my deck. I read many reviews on other sanders prior to this purchase. It make my work go VERY quickly. The unit is easy to hold and handle, it's weight is OK to manage, and is pretty quite for the work it does.
The dust collector, although it doesn't collect 100% of the dust, does a very good job. I haven't used the vacuum attachment, but I'm confident that the vac attachment would greatly improve the dust condition. This little sander made easy work of sanding many redwood rails and spindles.
My hands are large (3XL)., so my pinky fingers got a little heat from the exhaust vent on the side of the tool, but no amount of leaning on this thing - for hours - caused it to have the least bit of problems.Heavy grit sanding discs - like the 60 grit - seem to give up on the velcro side long, long, long before the abrasive side is done. Edit:Probably a dozen more hours sanding the glue off the walls of the adjoining room. That said, after hours of sanding with this, my hands don't feel numb from the vibration, and my hands are about as unused to this type of labor as you're going to get. I'm guessing that's the paper I went with, as a new disc sticks to the tool like glue.Again, having a decent sander has saved me a lot more than it cost, and I don't have any complaints about this one. Worth my money. I was trying to strip old wallpaper glue that had been applied - many years ago - to bare plaster, some bare drywall, and some primed drywall.
The sander has several hours of continuous use, which isn't nearly enough to judge it's reliability. Previously, we figured the only option was to re-drywall this room, as no amount of scraping or scrubbing or chemicals were making any difference to whatever glue they had used.So I moved to 60 grit paper. The dust filter is worth it's weight in gold; it catches the majority of whatever I was sanding off the walls. Stripping with 80 grit worked better than expected. Hopefully in the long run it lives up to the rest of the glowing reviews. A+++ There was a fiber tape sealing the plaster at the corners that was frayed, so that was spackled over pretty heavily; 220 grit and the sander on it's lowest setting let me work that down to a respectable finish.
This gadget saved me days of labor.
This unit comes with a one year warranty vs others out there of lesser cost that have a three year to a lifetime warranty. Th sealed power switch is sometimes difficult to engage. Bearings can not be purchased separately, you have to replace the whole armature at half the cost of the sander. The dust collection filter is the best I've used.
Bosch ROS20VSKAt 2.2 Amps I would consider this a "finishing" sander. The bottom line is, I do not think this product is of good value because I can not justify the purchased price. Brushes have to be purchased as an assembly rather than a set which doubles that cost. It doesn't have the grit of the other 3.0 Amp randm orbital I use.
The big down side is the cost of repair parts. Unfortunately, I did not research the "parts" situation until after the purchase. The 8' flexible cord is very nice. The variable speed function probably will never be used other than max position.
If this sander seems like it has a bunch of features you'll never use, you won't be sorry you over-bought. The sander has a smooth start up, and the tool vibration is slight to minimal. I think this sander was about $10 more than my other top choices, and I definitely made the right decision; it was well worth the money. Two young kids have reduced me to a weekend DIYer at best, therefore I don't have a lot of time to mess around with tools that jam easily or can only perform on a B-grade level. Most likely, you'll use the features but just won't know it. The variable speed option and the dust collection capabilities tipped the scales for Bosch. I researched the heck out of RO sanders, and narrowed it down to about three--DeWalt, Porter Cable, and Bosch. I don't even bother with a dust mask anymore (although I know I should) when sanding; the dust collection is that good.
Superior dust collection. Operation is very smooth. No regrets; very satisfied. You can't go wrong with this sander. Very quite.
